I Love You, Mum! A Guide to Choosing a Beautiful Mother's Day Gift

Mothering Sunday or Mother's Day?  A Short History

In the UK, Mothering Sunday was originally a time when people returned home and to the "mother" church. This was the church in which they were baptised or attended services when they were children. It, therefore, became a time when families were reunited as many people returned to the towns and villages where they grew up. In time, it became customary for young people who were working in-service to be given a holiday on Mothering Sunday. They could use this day to visit their own mother and they would often take a gift of flowers, a tradition that still exists to this day.

Mothering Sunday in the UK is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. This is the period in the Christian calendar between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Lent is normally a period of fasting and abstinence from rich, heavy, sweet food.  However, this fast was lifted on Mothering Sunday when many people prepared the traditional marzipan-rich fruit Simnel cake to eat with their family on this day.

Celebrate this special day together[/caption] By way of comparison, the US event is called Mother's Day.  This was launched separately in 1914 and was not linked (as it was in the UK) to religion but rather was dedicated entirely to mothers.  It was established by a woman called Ann Jarvis who was the leader of a movement which campaigned for a day to honour all mothers.  She wanted this day to fall in May in memory of her own mother who had died that month.  Having been formalised by President Wilson, Mother's Day in the US is an annual holiday held on the second Sunday in May.  Many other countries around the world have since adopted America's date.

A Celebration of all Mother Figures

And whether you call it Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day, it's a beautiful tradition that has stood the test of time. It's a day to honour not only our mother but also, perhaps, other "mother" figures in our life such as grandmothers, step-mothers and mothers-in-law.

Mother's Day Gifts

A thoughtful Mother's Day gift, big or small, to celebrate this day is always appreciated.  And to help make choosing a gift for your mother a little easier, I’ve put together a little Scarf Room edit of several Mother's Day gift ideas.

Silk Scarf - Perfect Mother's Day Gift

The first scarf I’ve chosen is a beautiful silk scarf with a bright abstract pattern from our capsule silk collection.  Silk always makes an elegant addition to one's wardrobe.  You could wear this ladies scarf over simple knitwear during the day as well as elegant evening wear at night.  Or do what the Italians do and tie a silk scarf around a day or evening bag.  Keep an eye out to our website for new addition to our silk collection coming soon!
